Topic: Rico and Gina...Sonny and Trudy?? Posted: 19 January 2005 at 9:35pm |
Found this over at joblo.com.....
Filming on the feature film adaptation of MIAMI VICE starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx is set to begin filming this spring with Michael Mann directing. To date little was known about the film but I got my hands on a casting call for the film that sheds a little bit of light on what we might see in Mann's big-screen vision for Crockett and Tubbs. Each of the main characters will have a love interest in the film. Ricardo Tubbs will be involved with Gina Calabrese, a former New York cop who has been working on the Miami vice squad for six years with a specialty is high-level computer operations. Sonny Crockett meanwhile looks to Trudy Joplin a "multiethnic," athletic member of the vice squad for wisdom and advice. Unlike Gina, Trudy is more "hands-on" and has expertise in precision weapons. While it's a given that both Crockett and Tubbs would have their ladies, so to speak, it wouldn't be a MIAMI VICE film without an intimidating heavy. Therein lies Archangel De Jesus Montoya-Londono. Say that five times fast. Montoya is the head of an elite drug cartel and is fearless in how he operates. His right-hand man is Jose "Cochi Loco" Yero whose nickname translates to "Crazy Pig". He runs operations, communications and security for Montoya and has a reputation for being....well, a little crazy (you didn't think he got that nickname by picking daisies, did you?). Casting is underway for these roles and the film will go into production in Miami and the Dominican Republic in just a few months.

God I hope this is off the mark. If Sonny is in with Trudy and Rico is in with Gina - then that's it... you can be assured the show will suck. :(
Sonny & Gina belong together.

Have Gina & Trudy been cast yet? In this day and age of movie adaptations they could have flip flopped Gina & Trudy's ethnic roots. Just as Will Smith played Jim West in "The Wild Wild West" and Michael Clark Duncan played the Kingpin in "Daredevil" maybe Gina is has the African American background instead of Trudy? Not that there's anything wrong with that...

This makes me heartsick!
I can almost understand the notion of a modern take on Miami Vice. But why rearrange something so fundamental as the characterizations? It wasn't broke, why fix it?

Why not? What is wrong with Sonny and Trudy to be a good lover?
Anyway, this movie it is not original Miami Vice, that's matter who is with who. They can find girlfriend for sonny's pet Elvis too.

I think I must be one of the few who actually preferred Trudy to Gina and always thought that the Trudy/Sonny combination would have been much more interesting (although clearly before its time back in the 80s). Gina was sweet but wasn't challenging enough for Crockett (unlike Caitlin who was meant to be sparkier). I always thought Trudy seemed tougher/harder though they never developed her character to its full potential.
To date i have been completely against the MV movie but it is beginning to look more interesting if this a potential story line! Sounds very amusing!

Like katey kay, I also (on the whole) preferred Trudy to Gina. A far more "spunky" character, a real "sista with attitude". Just a shame she wasn't given more screen time and allowed to shine more.
I for one am looking forward to the movie with interest and am keeping an open mind on it. I think it should be judged on its own merits and shouldn't be written off before shooting has even started. Let's just wait and see the final, finished product before we pass judgement.
They seem not to be making some kind of comedy monstrosity like they did with "Starsky & Hutch", so first of all let's be grateful for that.
I'm sure that the movie will have some things that are good and somethings that are not so good. But as long as there are some sultry Miami backdrops, a strong story and a great music soundtrack, I think we could be in for a treat as long as we don't get too nostalgic for the '80s. I mean - do we really (in our heart of hearts) want to see a pot-bellied 55 year-old DJ reprising the role of Crockett?
The '80s was the '80s and thanks to the miracle of video (and now DVD) we can forever travel back in time whenever we want and experience Vice as it was back then.
But today os today and it will be interesting to get a whole new take on things - and if Michael Mann is directing, I think that bodes well.

Cool thread.
I think since Michael Mann is trying to keep it dark & gritty, and to stay away from that corny retro version of S&H. He may be on to something that we havent been clued in on yet. So lets give it some time, and hopefully we get something good out of it.
I just dont see Colin Farrell pulling off the cool Crockett aura. Im not sure if that will work for me. Then again, ill give it some time.

With Yerkovich and Mann at the helm, I think the vision is in good hands. The movie is in pre-production. Anything and everything might change several times, most notably the script. It's way too early to start worrying.

Hmmm. Crockett and Joplin.
I've seen some fan fiction on the theme, and although the mind's eye had to get used to the image, it worked pretty well on paper. She was a pretty fiesty character and would have certainly given Crockett a run for his money.
Even though the original Miami Vice decade was the '80's, that never seemed to stop Mann when it came to controversial topics or realism. In fact, I'm surprised he never thought of having them write in a few "sparks" between Sonny and Trudy in his story lines.
There were scenes on the show when Trudy was shown looking up to Crockett, almost like "hero worshipping" so to speak. In fact, in the scene in "Dutch Oven" when they were on the St. Vitus together and Trudy is watching him intently, I got the impression she had feelings for him that were more than colleague or friend. And the way she talked to him in the hospital when he was shot may not have been considered romantic, but it was pretty intense and showed how much she admired and respected him.
Face it...this new MV movie will never be a clone of the show, but that could turn out to be a good thing. Let's try and see how Mann modernizes the story for today's audiences and with a little magic, maybe he'll manage to win over a whole new generation.
